The masterpiece that is Zipaquira Cathedral was built by the miners 2,652 metres above sea level; its beauty and elegance transcend anything you’ve seen before. Whilst you’re in the cathedral visit the sacred axis, salt dome and mine, which is the largest deposit of salt rock in the world; as well as the balconies, narthex complex and naves of the cathedral. Another attraction is the illuminated mirror of water, which gracefully lights up the whole area with its reflections - a truly striking experience.

Make your own El Dorado pilgrimage to the sacred Lake of Guatavita. Located just 35 miles north east of Bogota, it’s an ideal escape from the city to the spectacular surrounding countryside. We drive through La Calera for unbeatable panoramic views, hike to Lake Guatavita and visit the traditional village of Guatavita.

Leaving Bogota we first drive to La Calera from where stunning views over the city unfold. Surrounded by rolling hills and lush landscapes, this is a drive to remember. Once we reach Sesquilé in the Almeidas province, we stretch our legs and enjoy an ecological walk up to the magical peculiarly circular Lake Guatavita. Located 3,000 metres above sea level, but only 300 metres across, its formation still remains a mystery: it is said it was formed in a crater; however other theories still exist such as meteorite or sinkhole. Legend also has it that this is where the El Dorado legend occurred; it’s one of the Muisca’s sacred lakes and where they conducted a ritual thought to have started the crazed search for gold. Its sparkling beauty will leave you dumbfounded, and not just for its mythical gold.

Finally, we head into Guatavita where you can see how a typical Colombian village works. Admire its architecture, which was rebuilt on higher ground after the original village of Guatavita was intentionally flooded to create the Tominé Dam. At the end of the tour we make our way back to Bogota in the late afternoon.

Meeting/pick-up point: Pick-up at the hotel.
Duration: Six hours.
