Classic Buenos Aires city tour

day 2 - Tour compartido - en español
Discover why Buenos Aires is affectionately known as the ‘Paris of South America’ with this private tour of Argentina’s elegant capital.

Highlights
- Discover the iconic landmarks of the bustling city of Buenos Aires
- Drive down the famous Avenida 9 de Julio and admire the giant Obelisk
- Gaze at the magnificent Metropolitan Cathedral at Plaza de Mayo

Enjoy the freedom of the city’s abundant parklands and boulevards, exploring the centre and discovering some of the traditional neighbourhoods and as well as the most significant landmarks.

The tour starts with a drive down Avenida 9 de Julio, one of the widest boulevards in the world, passing the famous Obelisk that commemorates the fourth centenary of the city’s foundation. Stop at the Plaza de Mayo to visit the Casa Rosada, as the presidential palace is popularly known, and the magnificent Metropolitan Cathedral with its impressive neo-classical façade and mausoleum of national hero General San Martin. See also the Cabildo museum, located in the former headquarters of the Spanish colonial administration.

Next it’s on to the colourful district of La Boca, where the first Italian immigrants settled in 1851. The neighbourhood is a major attraction because of its vibrant street life and the brightly painted homes of Caminito, the area’s main artery.

Continue to the remarkable Recoleta Cemetery, considered one of the world’s most beautiful graveyards and which is the final resting place of many of Argentina’s great and good (as well as some villains) including famous patriots, several presidents, Nobel laureates and Evita. The tour ends with a drive around the chic Recoleta quarter with its exclusive boutiques and restaurants, before returning to your hotel.

Ushuaia

About the city

Ushuaia, which overlooks the emerald waters of the Beagle Channel, claims to be the southernmost city in the world and is the largest city in Argentine Tierra del Fuego. The beautiful town is nestled between the freezing waters of the Bay of Ushuaia and the snow-clad peaks behind. The snow-capped mountains are in view almost everywhere you look.Ushuaia is a good base from where to explore the surrounding beautiful scenery but there is also plenty to see in town. Parallel to the shoreline, Avenida San Martin is the main commercial street of the town and where everything is happening. It is a popular place for strolling, the street is lined with shops, cafes and restaurants. In the centre of Ushuaia you can see some interesting old houses built in the old colonial style, as well as the interesting Museo Del Fin Del Mundo, located in the Old House of Government. The former prison of Ushuaia has been turned into a museum and an art gallery. Main attractions in Ushuaia are, however, on the dazzling outdoors, such as the Isla los Lobos, the penguin rookeries or the famous Martial glacier.Ushuaia is the gateway to Antarctica and the Tierra del Fuego National Park. It is a great place to view wildlife including penguins, dolphins, orcas, seals and a wide variety of birds. Ushuaia is where the world ends or where it starts.

Beagle Channel Catamaran

day 5 - In Spanish
This dramatic catamaran cruise is a once in a lifetime chance to experience the same sights and sounds that naturalist Charles Darwin witnessed when he sailed up the Beagle Channel in the famous eponymous ship.

Departing from the port of Ushuaia, the catamaran embarks on an unforgettable tour of the stunning landscapes and natural wonders that surround the town on all sides. As you sail out of Ushuaia harbour, enjoy the magnificent panoramic views of what is said to be the most southerly city in the world and its extraordinary setting, with jagged mountain peaks forming a backdrop. With a running commentary to provide expert information on the sights, the vessel makes its way into the Beagle Channel and passes close to the Isla de los Pajaros (‘Bird Island’), home to a large number of bird species, including a large colony of cormorants.

Next the cruise sails around the Isla de los Lobos (‘Island of Wolves’), a rocky outcrop where large numbers of seals and sea lions take up residence.

The catamaran offers both enclosed areas, for those preferring to stay out of the elements, and open deck space for the more adventurous, so there are plenty of opportunities for budding wildlife photographers, especially at Isla de los Lobos, where the captain steers close to shore. On the return trip to Ushuaia the cruise passes by the remarkable Les Eclaireures End-of-the-World Lighthouse. The duration of the cruise is approximately two and half hours.
